India Fines Firm $46 Million for Groundwater Contamination11:03 AM MDT | August 1, 2011 | Deepti Ramesh India's Supreme Court has ordered Hindustan Agro Chemicals (Mumbai) to pay a total of Rs2.02 billion ($46 million), which includes a fine of Rs370 million the court had ordered it to pay in a ruling in 1996 for polluting groundwater in the state of Rajasthan, and an interest on the fine, reports say. Hindustan Agro Chemicals was, as previously announced, ordered by the Supreme Court on February 13, 1996, to close its manufacturing unit in Rajasthan and to pay the fine, as part of its efforts to crack down on polluters.
