European Parliament votes for mandatory targets to boost second-generation biofuels

The European Parliament's environment committee today voted in favor of setting mandatory targets to boost the use of second-generation biofuels, the parliament says. Second-generation biofuels are produced from wastes, algae, and other sources that do not compete directly with food and feed crops. "A reliable model for measuring indirect land use change [ILUC] must be found before including [the targets] in legislation," say the committee members. Greater production of second-generation biofuels should be encouraged by gradually phasing in mandatory...
