DOE Funds Project to Use Termite Microbes to Make Ethyl Acetate

The U.S. DOE, has awarded ZeaChem (Lakewood, CO) $25 million to underpin the development of the firm’s technology to convert poplar trees and other biomass into fuels and high value chemicals using a microbe sourced in termites. The award represents a part of DOE’s $564 million shot in the arm to develop next-generation biofuel processes in the U.S. ZeaChem is one of 19 organizations to be selected by DOE for a grant.
