U.S. Firm Begins Commercializing Process for Algae-to-Oil

Publicly traded biotech firm OriginOil (Los Angeles, CA) says it is commercializing a “breakthrough” technology for generating algae from biofuel. The process uses ultrasound and an electromagnetic pulse to breakdown that algal cell walls and release oils which occur naturally in the organism. Carbon dioxide is then added to the algal solution to lower its pH and separate biomass from oil. The oil is then skimmed off the surface of the water for processing. The water may be recycled.
