The jv initially focused on 1-butanol, a straight-chain alcohol. The companies say they are now developing technologies for 2-butanol and iso-butanol, which can be blended into gasoline at concentrations of above 10% without compromising fuel performance. BP says it has found that blends of gasoline containing 16% of the high-octane butanol perform similar to gasoline blends containing 10% ethanol.
