Researchers at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU; Cleveland, OH) say they have developed a low cost catalyst made from carbon nanotubes dipped in a polymer solution that equals the energy output and otherwise outperforms platinum catalysts in fuel cells. This technology development has huge potential to change the outlook for fuel cells; currently platinum represents at least a quarter of the cost of fuel cells. The chemical currently sells for about $65,000/kg. The CWRU researchers say the production costs of their activated carbon nanotubes cost about $100/kg.
 
Bayer CropScience has agreed to buy Hornbeck Seed Company Inc. (DeWitt, AK), a privately-held seeds company supplying soybean, rice, and wheat varieties in the southern U.S. market, with an inhouse soybean breeding program and proprietary soybean germplasm. Financial terms were not disclosed.
John Tomich, professor of biochemistry, and Xiuzhi Sun, professor of grain science and industry at Kansas State University (KSU; Manhattan, KS) say they have secured a patent for a pH-dependent, peptide-based adhesive which becomes stronger as it dries.

World Water Day on March 22 saw students around the world invited to join in what may have been the world’s largest ever chemistry experiment. The event has been supported by Dow Chemical as a part of its activities relating to the International Year of Chemistry. Results of the experiments will be showcased by the year-end, Dow Chemical says.
