Former president Lázaro Cárdenas announced the nationalization of Mexico’s oil industry on 18 March 1938 after a long period of conflicts involving foreign oil producers, the relatively young oil workers union Sindicato Unico de Trabajadores Petroleros, and the Mexican government.
