During the week ended 30 January, chemical railcar traffic in North America increased 0.2% year-on-year as a gain in the United States offset a decline in Canada. Volume totaled 44,595 carloads, up 8.5% from the previous week, according to data the Association of American Railroads released on 3 February. For the year to date, chemical railcar traffic in North America is flat versus a 15% decrease in all railcar traffic....

Olin reports a net loss for the fourth quarter of $59.3 million, down from earnings of $12.8 million in the year-ago period. Chemours is planning the construction of a $178 million plant at Ingleside, TX, for the production of the refrigerant HFO-1234yf, according to documents released by local authorities. Strong demand and shipping inquiries from Asia have put a strain on cargo space for US petrochemical exports, pushing up freight rates out of the US. The primary driver has been expanding US methanol production capacity, but strong Asian interest in US para-xylene (p-xylene), styrene, ethanol and ethylene dichloride has also  contributed to the pinch.
