Westlake says conversions to cost-advantaged ethane feedstock improved first-quarter margins in the vinyls chain, but the gain was more than offset by lower margins in olefins. The company reports first-quarter net income of $146 million, down 7.6% year-on-year (YOY) from $158 million. Net sales increased 7.4% YOY to $1.104 billion, mainly on the contribution of Vinnolit, the specialty PVC resin business acquired last July. Earnings per share of $1.10 fell short of the analysts’ consensus estimate of $1.18, as compiled by Thomson Reuters (New York)....
