Westlake says conversions to cost-advantaged ethane feedstock improved first-quarter margins in the vinyls chain, but the gain was more than offset by lower margins in olefins. The company reports first-quarter net income of $146 million, down 7.6% year-on-year (YOY) from $158 million. Net sales increased 7.4% YOY to $1.104 billion, mainly on the contribution of Vinnolit, the specialty PVC resin business acquired last July. Westlake reports net income for the fourth quarter of $183 million, up 7% year-over-year (YOY) from $171 million on the advantage of converting from propane to ethane feedstock. OxyChem (Dallas, TX) and Mexichem (Tlalnepantla, Mexico) say that their 50-50 jv, Ingleside Ethylene, began construction of its 540,000 m.t./yr ethane cracker at OxyChem’s Ingleside, TX, complex in the second quarter of 2014. Axiall (Atlanta) says lower electrochemical unit values and higher ethylene costs cut into third-quarter volume gains. Net income totaled $44.5 million, up 6% year-on-year (YOY) from $39.0 million. OxyChem, the chemical segment of Occidental Petroleum, has reported earnings for the first quarter of $136 million, down 14% year-on-year. The company attributes the decrease to lower caustic soda prices driven by new chlor-alkali capacity. However, the company says higher polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride margins, resulting from improvement in US construction markets, and higher volumes across all products offset most of the decline.
