Eastman shut down its HCC-4 hydrocracker at Longview, TX, on 28 July after discovering a leak in a process pipe. The pipe is being repaired, and Eastman expects to bring the unit back online later this week. The incident caused no injuries, and the company does not expect it to have any offsite impact....

PetroLogistics (Houston) says the deadline for terminating its merger agreement with Flint Hills Resources to pursue alternative proposals from third parties passed on 7 July. Flint Hills, a subsidiary of Koch Industries, agreed in late May to acquire the propylene maker for $2.1 billion.

BASF’s proposal to build a world-scale methane-to-propylene (MTP) complex on the US Gulf Coast is strategically sound, and it may also be tactically savvy, says Chuck Carr, senior director/global olefins at IHS Chemical. BASF needs to address the shrinking supply of propylene produced by North America's steam crackers, and on-purpose production is most likely the answer. At the same time, the choice of MTP over propane dehydrogenation (PDH) suggests that BASF may expect the gap between crude oil and natural gas prices to grow over the long term, providing an advantage to production from methane....
