Compass Minerals (Overland Park, Kansas) reports third-quarter net income of 9.1 million, down 66.3% year-over-year (YOY) from $27.0 million. Sales totaled $179.6 million, down 22.8% YOY from $232.7 million. Earnings per share of $0.27 fell just shy of the average analyst estimate of $0.28. Compass attributes the results to lower sales volumes in its salt segmentand lower average selling prices in both the salt and plant nutrition segments. However, sales volumes in plant nutrition increased YOY for the first time in six quarters, and the company expects the improvement to continue in the fourth quarter....
