Koppers Holdings (Pittsburgh, PA) is exploring the consolidation of its North American tar distillation operations, including naphthalene and phthalic anhydride production, at Stickney, IL. The company says it will be applying for the necessary environmental permits, and a decision could be made within several months. If the project goes forward, the new naphthalene plant could start up in early 2016, says Koppers....

Dow Chemical has declared force majeure (FM) on vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) produced at Texas City, TX, where the company’s 365,000-m.t./year VAM plant remains offline following a planned maintenance turnaround, says a company source. Two workers were injured on 7 July by a fire at Chevron Phillips Chemical’s (CPChem; The Woodlands, TX) Port Arthur, TX, facility. CPChem says the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The company has not said what part of the facility has been affected, but sources in the market believe it is the 853,000-m.t./year ethylene plant, which could be out of commission for up to two weeks....
