A fire at an ethylene purification unit at Formosa Plastics’ complex at Point Comfort, TX yesterday, injured 14 people. Eight of the injured have been treated and released as of Friday morning, according to a company spokesperson. 

The fire occurred in an ethylene purification area near the site’s “PE 1” high-density polyethylene (HDPE) production unit.

DuPont expects sequential improvement in industrial demand as the year progresses. “We anticipate improvements in demand in the second half from industrial markets,” says DuPont chair and CEO Ellen Kullman. “This is based on our evaluation of country and regional forecast[s] for general industrial production, auto production, home building and construction, solar module production, and other markets.” Global industrial production was up 1% in the first quarter and “will get to 2.5% for the year, which means an improving economy as we go quarter to quarter,” Kullman adds....

Celanese posted first-quarter net income of $142 million, a decline of 26% due mainly to a significant favorable tax benefit in the year-ago quarter. Excluding charges, Celanese says that adjusted Ebit and earnings were significantly higher. Reported adjusted earnings were $1.14/share, up 44% from the year-ago period and well above the consensus estimate of 78 cts. Adjusted Ebit for the quarter totaled $269 million.
