Praxair reported third-quarter net income of $430 million, up $1 million from the year-ago quarter. Sales in the quarter were $2.8 billion, 4% below the prior-year quarter. The company reported adjusted earnings of $1.39/share, down 1% from the year-quarter and matching analyst estimates as reported by Thomson Reuters (New York). Praxair says it expects diluted earnings in the fourth quarter to be in the range of $1.35–1.40/share, below the current median analyst estimate of $1.43/share....

Dow Chemical says it will eliminate approximately 2,400 positions, or 5% percent of its global workforce, citing “persistently slow macroeconomic growth.” The restructuring includes the shutdown of approximately 20 manufacturing facilities. DuPont reported net income of $10 million, down from $452 million in the year-ago quarter. Sales from continuing operations were $7.4 billion, 9% below last year, reflecting sharp volume declines in solar and titanium dioxide (TiO2), particularly in Asia, the company says.
