Dow Chemical will reduce its global workforce by 1,500–1,700, about 3% of the company’s total, to streamline operations as a result of the pending divestment of most of its chlor-alkali assets. Dow says it also plans “minor” adjustments to its manufacturing assets. Dow says the actions will save $300 million in annual operating costs. Westlake says conversions to cost-advantaged ethane feedstock improved first-quarter margins in the vinyls chain, but the gain was more than offset by lower margins in olefins. The company reports first-quarter net income of $146 million, down 7.6% year-on-year (YOY) from $158 million. Net sales increased 7.4% YOY to $1.104 billion, mainly on the contribution of Vinnolit, the specialty PVC resin business acquired last July.
