Industry aims to preempt a move by the EU to formally adopt a policy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 25% from 1990 levels by 2020, compared with the current target to reduce GHGs 20% by 2020. The commission concludes that reducing the bloc’s carbon emissions by 25% by 2020 would be more cost effective policy in the long term. Cefic says an increased target would be counterproductive because it creates uncertainties in an already unstable, post-crisis business environment.

On a visit with an auto manufacturing customer a few years ago, I asked him what he would like to change about his cars. He said he would love to have components to build cars that are safer for drivers and lighter weight to decrease emissions. Oh, and they should also be less expensive than what we use today. After I got over the initial reaction to such a tall order, I said, “Great idea.
