The European Commission has moved six chemical substances “of very high concern” from the candidate list to the authorization list under the European Union’s (EU) Reach regulation. It means that the substances will be banned in the EU within 3-5 years unless an authorization is granted to individual companies for their use. U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. EPA have signed a statement of intent to cooperate with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA; Helsinki) on issues relating to chemical safety and regulation. ECHA is the body responsible for implementing the Regulation, Authorisation and Evaluation of Chemicals (Reach) program in the European Union (EU).
